Application Replacing an Imported Forklift Controller
Many controllers in electric forklifts, pallet trucks and stackers come from imported brands such as Curtis, Zapi or Sevcon. When one fails, spare parts can take weeks and the price can be high relative to the vehicle’s value. Is it possible to switch to a locally made motor drive, and what should you watch for?
There Is No Drop-In Equivalent — There Is Adaptation
Controllers from different manufacturers differ in connectors, I/O layout and parameters. Expecting an “equivalent” that plugs straight into another brand’s place is therefore unrealistic. The right approach is to identify the vehicle’s motor, battery and control signals, then wire and configure the new drive accordingly.
Information to Collect Before Switching
- Motor type: brushed or series-wound DC, AC induction or PMSM; a photo of the motor label.
- Battery voltage and the vehicle’s lifting capacity.
- Current ratings of the traction and pump motors; one controller or separate ones?
- Throttle signal type, direction and seat switches, parking brake and main contactor wiring.
- Whether the motor has Hall sensors or an encoder.
- Whether there is CAN communication with a display or BMS.
Steps of the Switch
- Collecting information and choosing the right model
- Preparing a wiring diagram for the vehicle
- Parameter setup: current limits, acceleration and deceleration ramps, braking behaviour
- Testing in a controlled environment, then a field trial
Advantages of a Local Drive
- Short lead times and fast access to spare parts
- Engineering support from the same team for commissioning and failures
- Application-specific current, communication and software adaptation
Which NESDrive Series?
Our DC motor controller series BAMSI suits vehicles with brushed and series-wound DC motors, while our BLDC motor controller series TULPAR suits AC induction, BLDC and PMSM motors. See our forklift motor controller page for forklift specifics, and why motor controllers burn out for failure causes.
Share your application requirements and our engineering team will recommend the best NESDrive model.
